Among my wife's ancestors is an Ellen Furneaux who married John Callard at Buckfastleigh Devon on 27 Oct 1789. Their first son Henry Callard born 05 Feb 1784, married a Maria Christiana Elliot born 30 Sept 1803. They were my wife's G-G-G grandparents.
My Furneaux family are from London - Blue Gate Fields, St George in the East to be precise. My ggg grandmother was Ann FURNEAUX 1791-1839, her parents were John FURNEAUX b 1760 and Jane MITCHELL, his father John FURNEAUX b c1734, married Margaret THOMPSON in 1757. They were shipwrights and ropemakers. Other males in the family had the christian names Pearce and Pearson, which makes me wonder if they were connected to the Pearce family I have seen mentioned. I cannot find any earlier traces of them, and wonder where they originated, picking Devon as a possible area, given their occupations. Any ideas?
My nephew recently returned from Ireland and bought back a bottle of Buckfast Tonic that we had never heard of, or its reputation. Anyhow, my wifes Grandmother was Doris Furneaux, daughter of Samuel ( 1868-1946 )and Mary Ellen Furneaux from Buckfastly. Samuel was hired to come to Australia to be the foreman of the Tanning mill in Footscray and process the leather for the War. Stan Canning, my wifes grandfather also worked there and met the bosses daughter Doris Furneaux and married her. My wifes mother remembers Samuel as being as being a very hard and stern man. His daughetr Dorris died from an anurisim suddenly in Melbourne at a young age of 47 years old in 1948. Samuel and his daughter Dorris went back to Buckfastleigh to see family in the 1920's. My wifes mother has some old pictures of Samuel and Dorris if anyone would like to see them.
Hi I am working on our family tree and my wife appears to be connected to two branches of the Furneaux family. She is the 7th great granddaughter of a Thomas Furneaux born about 1690 in Paignton, Devon. This branch appears to connect into the Warrens of Buckfastleigh through Andrew Warren b1811 and back to her father Thomas Bawdon b.1924. The second link is again through a Warren (John b.1742) who marries Mary Furneaux b 1748 in Buckfastleigh she is my wifes 5th great grandmother. I cant seem to find either of these Furneaux's on this site. But surely they must be linked. Am I going mad!!!

Hi. I just discovered an Eleanor Furneaux (b. 1665 in Paignton, Devon, England). She married Thomas Metherel. Her father was Henry Furneaux 9b. 1649) also of Paignton who married Wilmot Full. Does anyone have information about this line? I would love to know more. Thanks :)
My Grandfather in Roger Furneaux. (deceased)
Hello! I am working on my Furneaux Family Tree and have reached a sticking point with Lewis Furneaux whos descendents were all watchmakers of Clerkenwell and Coventry. Lewis married Elizabeth Payne in 1765 at St James church, Clerkenwell, London. There are four descendents called Lewis Furneaux, but I cannot find a baptism for the earlier Lewis, and would like to know where he came from. He could be a sibling on one of several other Furneaux in the London area at about the same time or earlier. Can anyone help, or make any suggestions as to how I can find out more. This is a great website and I have been amazed at how many of us there are worldwide. Yolande
Fellow Furneaux family - I am wanting to connect with other members of the Furneaux family and examine our family tree.
My grandmother was Mildred Ferneau Leonard, her ancestor was John Ferneau, born 1760 Amsterdam (family immigrated from France), Hessian in US Revolutionary War, after which family settled in (at the time) Virginia, USA, family moved to Ohio where my grandmother was born (father Clinton Jones Ferneau) in approx 1910.
My gg grandmother was Ann Eliza Furneaux b c.1822 location unknown, and died, Birkenhead Port Adelaide, South Australia in 1914. She married John Reed(c.1825-1893), at St Paul's Church, Port Adelaide, South Australia,on the 4th Sept 1851. I don't know if they were born in Australia or were immigrants. Any information would be appreciated. Regards Tom
Hello, My Great great grandmother was Andree Fourneaux, she left her family in France to marry and was sort of banished. The name of the man she wed was Jack Wheeler and they had a daughter, Marie Therese Wheeler Fourneaux (my late grandmother). I was just wondering if you had anything in your records about Andree or whether im decendant of an entirely different Fourneaux family. Regards, Belinda
I seem to be the descendent of Ann Furneaux (1778-1830) who married William Mann. Ann's parents were Samuel Furneaux and Mary Mudge. So was very interested when I came across this website. Much of the info on it seemed to confirm information I have dug up. Howver it all gets a little confusing going further back than the 2 Thomas Furneauxs (both wardens, vicars etc) - then your tree seems to skip a few centuries .... and somehow make a connection to about 1290. Which makes me suspicious.
Hello, Today I discovered my connection to the Furneaux family - my great grandmother is Mabel Edith Furneaux, daughter of Thomas Furneaux and Edith Franklin. Incidently, Mabel Edith actually married Walter George Pilgrim (not Stanley Pilgrim as shown on the family tree here) and she had 2 children, Peggy Pilgrim and Kenneth Walter Pilgrim (my grandfather). Very happy to find my connection to this family! Claire Bolton
carrying on Ulfketel was killed at the battle of Ashington along-side his father and brother in-law in 1016.It is more than possbitly that this Ulfketel is the father or grand father of Ansketel who with Edward the confessor. It has also been considered that Odo and Ansketel were brothers, but ansketelwas the father and odo brother was angot. If you look at the new map, you will find that red dots are the ansketel manors the blue ones are Odo manors and his sons are in yellow angots manors are in green. The furneaux strong-holds were in cambridgeshire, yorkshire, northampton, norfolk, hertfordshire devon somerset.of the 38 county,s of england the furneaux,s are 20 of them in the domesday book. michael.furneaux
It would be wise for people of the furneaux family to read Anglo Saxon Chronicles for here we will find the name Earl Ulfketel.Ulfketel was the son-law married Wulfhild daughter of King Ethelred the Unready. (to be continued)
My great Grandmother was an Elizabeth Ann Callard born 1855 and I have taken her family name back and found a Henry Callard 1651 - 1702 who married a Joane Furneaux (1656-1702) on the 14th November 1676 in Buckfastleigh and is referred to in your index - I have yet to see where this lady sits in the Furneaux family tree but am proud to find the connection there.
I was wondering whether we can trace a family tree back to Tobias Furneaux, becuase my grandfather said that our family are directly decendant from him in our family. thanks sherelle
Good day; I am emailing you from Territory of Nunavut. There was a gentleman by the name of Michael Furneaux who worked with Hudson's Bay Company in Frobisher Bay, N.W.T. in the early 1960's. Michael's father, Patrick Furneaux worked as a Federal employee in Povingnituk, Northern Quebec. I believe that Michael Furneaux also had a sibling. From information from my family, Michael Furneaux was involved with a local inuit woman in Iqaluit and the woman conceived a child who was born in 1963. I do not think Mr. Furneaux ever knew of this child. Also from information, Mr. Furneaux died in a car crash, I believe in the 70's. His father, Patrick Furneaux with the 2 son's than lived in Ottawa, Ontario in the early 70's. Mr. Patrick Furneaux wrote a book called "An Art of an Eskimo". The child that was conceived is now 47 years old with her own children and now has grandchildren. I hope that you can help me possibly get her families photo's or information as my sister, who is a descendant of the Furneaux has never seen or met her family. I will await on your reply, so that we can possibly exchange more information. Thank you and Regards. Takialook Peter Iqaluit, NU Canada
My wife's family [Puckett] have given Furneaux as a middle name to numerous descendants, and originate in Brixham. Looking at the 1871 census there are many Furneaux's in Brixham and nearby, mosly with fishing or other seafaring occupations, and who seem relatively unconnected with the Buckfastleigh families. Clearly there was a Puckett-Furneaux link at some date, but you do not give locations on your family tree, so it is difficult to use the information. Do you have it in more detail in any format?
Hello. Do jou now if sombody of the Furneaux family was going to the east, Maritius or Indonesia around 1800-1810? Thanks Piet.

Hello I have restarted my search and am looking to trace info on ELENOR FURNEAUX b13/2/1665 Paignton and Married to THOMAS METHERELL ON 6/10/1685. I know that Elenor's father was a HENRY but which one ???!!
I stumbled across this web site this morning. I am trying to find out why some members of my wife's family have Furneaux as a middle name. So far I have found that this originates with Percy Furneaux Dawson child of a Helen Dawson (nee Kellie) (b April 29, 1843, Sydney, NSW, Australia) who married Adam Dawson and lived in Edinburgh. There is no Furneaux connection to the Dawson line. Percy had a brother Alexander Bashall Dawson and the Bashall comes from the marriage of Helen's sister Eweretta to Humphrey Miller Bashall. So is there a Furneaux-Kellie connection? Perhaps one of Helen's other sisters married a Furneaux or was Furneaux further back in the Kellie line? Any help appreciated. Russ
My G.Grandfather was Henry (Goulden) Furneaux. He was a Master Mariner but died sometime between July 1881 and April 1882. His daughter Henrietta Martin Furneaux (my great grandmother) was born in Hull in April 1882 her mother was Margaret nee Martin. Any information would be most welcome. Thankyou
I have a ggg grandmother, born Mary Ann Furneaux in Plymouth in 1795, but have been unable to find anything about her parentage. She married John Bartlett. If anyone has any furhter information about her or her parents, I would be very pleased.
Just stumbled across this site. I am decended from the Furneaux Family of Buckfastleigh.
My great great grandfather William Cooper married Matilda Furneaux (age 26years) on the 12th of July 1852 at Bethnal Green, London. Matilda is recorded as being the daughter of a Christopher Furneaux. A witness to the wedding was a Jane Furneaux. The 1861 census confirms Matildas place of birth as Buckfastleigh. I note on your web page that there is a Matilda born 1825 and assume this may be the Matilda I am searching for. Can anyone advise the source of the 1825 entry on your web page - and/or advise of any other Matildas, daughter of Christoper.

We just received the marriage licence info from Exeter for: Richard Blackler & Joan Furneaux Oct. 16, 1732. It could have been Ipplepen or Littlehempston as it seems to not have been recorded. Their children were born in Ipplepen - licence states that Richard was from Littlehempston & Joan from Ipplepen. We think that she was born in Buckfastleigh.

I was recently informed that a man was tracking down members of my family in the 60s. He told my grandfather that our part of the family are direct decendents of Ethan Allen, founder of the Green Mountain Boys, who was a big part of Vermont's history and a driving factor in the independence of Vermont as its own country and as a US state. Any records of this?

Hello everyone. I had come up against a blank wall with my Furnace family. I came across the 'article' and remembered that in a search, the name had changed around 1780 to Furnau in some of my documents. I put one of my oddest names of 'Robert Crankan Furnau son of Arthur in your search box and 'wow' up it came. All of my Furnace relatives lived in Stoke Damerel. My Great Grandfather was Richard Matthew Furnace his father was William a Captain in the merchant Navy. If I can provide any information please ask. Brick walls do fall!!!!!!
My father is Fred Furniaux (his siblings spelt it Furneaux). They were a large family from inner london. I have lots of cousins out there somewhere!
Hi I am a bit confused regarding Henry Furneaux (b.1668 - son of Christopher and Sybil). It states that he married Marie Tinkham and had 2 sons John (b.1704) and Richard (b.1709). Yet Henry was supposed to of married Mary Mudge in 1700! Are John and Richard the sons of Marie Tinkham or Mary Mudge? Many thanks Julie
Hi David What an amazing site. I've fallen across the Furneaux family through sheer chance. I'm descended twice through female lines and marriages with the Callards at Buckfastleigh (Mary 1658 and Sibella married 1740). This obviously is the line back through Christopher. I'm working backwards through your lines but wonder if you can help as there are a few generations missing in the early Middle Ages. When you get to the Ashburton Thomas Furneaux's who were vicar and churchwarden there is suddenly a leap back to 1297. Do you know who should be in between? Many thanks Kirsty
Just had a visit from Michaels cousin Juilet Furneaux Cole today. It was a great meeting and future connection. My wife and I moved to Victoria, BC 15 years ago. We know that my great, great, great grandfather Joseph Furneaux arrived in Port de Grave Newfoundland in the year 1785 at the age of 19 from Dartmouth , England to manage the local branch of Newman and Roope a seal oil company, etc. I' m hoping that Juliet or others who see this posting may help us link up more history of Joseph and our family. Would love to hear from anyone with more info.

My gggg-grandfather, Richard Townsend, (born about 1800 in Widecombe in the Moor) married Jane Furneaux, (born 1798) daughter of Richard Furneaux and Grace Macey, in Buckfastleigh, where they lived in Wooton or Wotton. Jane's unmarried sister Anne Furneaux (1806)lived with them. Can anyone help me to find the year of their marriage, so that I can be certain that Jane is the mother of Richard Townend's children, and not the stepmother. I don't want to claim I am a descendant of the Furneaux so long as I have no proof. You may be interested to know that we moved to Brittany 12 years ago (yes, I do miss Devon, especially Dartmoor)and I recently found that there is a little town in NORMANDY called Fourneaux (which is the correct French spelling of ovens!!!!) Is it possible that the Furneaux family came from there?? Yours sincerley Ingrid

Hello and thanks for such a great website !! I have discovered the name FURNEAUX in my tree and as with many I'm not sure where to start as there are so many. ELEANOR or ELIONOR Furneaux b 13Feb1665 was my 8x great grandmother. She married THOMAS METHERELL in Exeter in 1685. Her father was HENRY Furneaux who married a Wilmot or Welmoth FULL in Paignton, Devon 21 June 1660. This is as far as I can go as I do not have the birth details of HENRY . Can anyone help ?? Thanks a lot. Jacki
It has been about 1 month since i have posted a message with some of my family history on it I am just woundering why it has not been posted yet *****My apologies Samantha, I've been very busy - David Furneaux ****

I forgot to add my grandmothers date of birth and death it is, Dec 13 1922 - May 1997
For many years I have been trying to trace my Furneaux family history but I have not been able to. The farthest back I can go is my grandparents Edwin Charles Furneaux (Dec 31, 1913 - June 13 1988) and Hilda May Furneaux nee. Massie or Massey they had 11 children. if anybody can help me trace my family tree it would be greatly appreciatd. As far as I know I am nopt part of the Devon line. My grandfather was born in England.
Hi my granmother was Christine Furneaux. She was born in the Tiverton district and lived in Colyton, Devon. All I know from what she told me was that her father was a farmer and emigrated to Canada with one of her brothers, leaving his wife and the others behind to follow - they never did. I don't know his name I'm afraid but am doing a bit of researching back at the moment
Hello David, Thank-you for your wonderful website. I am a descendant of Ann Furneaux b1778 father: Samuel Furneaux, mother: Joan Furneax. Would you like the information that I have on their descendants? Kind Regards, Jodie
i would like to ask Michael whether Thomas Furneaux customs officer mentioned in his message 16th september 2002 isthe same one who lived at Bermuda Street Stepney in the 1841 census. Only this would be mygggggrandfather, who came to Stepney from Devon with his family, and was also a customs officer.Ifit is do you have any idea who his parents were?
My GGGGG Grandfather was Thomas Furneaux who was born in Devon about 1786, but i have not been able to go back any further. He was a customs officer and lived at Bemuda Street Stepney. his children,William, Jane, Charles, and George were all born in Devon. Can you find the connection Please.
This is a great site. Maybe I might just find my great-grandmother's family. She was Eliza Furniaux c1838 or Bethnal Green, daughter of John Furneaux (Furniaux)c1806 and Mary Ann Godier c1808 of Bethnal Green. I have had to assume that John's name was another of the misspelled names found on census records. The Pallot's Marriage index shows it as an i without the dot or an e without a loop, also, his place of birth is another assumption. I don't have any history for Eliza other than her marriage to William Henry Edmonds and their children. At one time Eliza lived at 100 Ford Rd. Her belongings were lost in a fire just after she died and my father died in WWII so there were no stories. If anyone has any information I would be most grateful. Thank you. Pauline
Hi, I'm the one who planted the tree at Kilve, though now slimmer and a bit older!I knew alot of the history of my line, being directly decended from Tobias Furneaux's elder brother James, but thanks to Mike, I now know about so many more interesting people, all decended from those 2 knights who came to England with William in 1066!what a great diverse family we are.
I noticed you don't go back to Avice Furnieulx spouse of Sir John Bytton, Knt. Her parents were Mathew Furnieulx and Mauld Raleigh 1286-000? dau-of Simon Raleigh 1258-000? Nettlecombe, England and Ela or Joanna Reigni 1262-000? of Glamorgan, Wales.
Thank you for the site. Thanks to you and with some information from one of my siblings recently I was able to link my line back to John James (b 1877 in the tree) and Thomas Furneaux. I was able to find a Canadian cenus from 1911 with them listed as well as John James' wife Ada and daughter Ivy Maud. (my grandmother). They imigrated to Canada in 1905. If there is somewhere I can send a copy of this for the family records please contact me.
Hi, my name is Amelia Furneaux. My mother and father are Lewis Colin and Margaret Furneaux. My gradparents are Jean and Barry Furneaux. Have you heard of us?
I am interested in finding out about my great-grandfather, Thomas Furneaux, who married a Louisa Clements. He lived in Bow and they had a son, Laurence Thomas, in 1899. There seem to be quite a number of Furneauxs living in the Poplar/Bow area of London at that time. I've reposted this as I've changed my email address.
I have just married a David John Furneaux looking to see where the surname came from.
My grandmother's maiden name was Helen Furneaux. She was born on 2/14/1919 in Lawrence, Massachusetts, USA. Her father was a successful butcher in Lawrence. His name was Samuel Edward Furneaux born 10/2/1893 in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He married Helen Dodson (also from Lawrence, Massachusetts). I have always believed my Furneaux heritage to be French, but think that British may be more accurate. I would love any information identifying the background of my great grandparents. I am just getting started in my search.
Greetings from NZ. I want to say thanks to both David and Michael for helping me in my search for my family's links to Buckfastleigh, Devon. My great grandfather John William Furneaux was born in Buckfastleigh in 1859, and thanks to Michael I have a copy of the Baptism Register with his details on it. We know that John William emigrated to NZ in 1880, and my grandfather William Furneaux was born here in NZ in 1892. My father, John Andrew Furneaux was born in 1929 and I was born in 1950. I have two chidren, William Malu Furneaux, born 1975, and Seini Elizabeth Furneaux, born 1976. Seini is now married to Wilmason Jensen and she has a son Lagafuaina William Malu Jensen. At each generation in our family line only one boy has been born, so that the Furneaux name has not developed parallel branches within our family, and the name is rare over here. Seeing so many branches of the Furneaux family on the website has been a revelation for me and searching through all the information on the site has been incredibly interesting. I'm hoping to obtain further information about my great-great grandfather William Furneaux, who was a sailor and was apparently killed on board his ship while it was in South America. Greetings to you all from New Zealand. Regards from Paul Furneaux.
My great grandmother was Emilie Furneaux and was born in Coventry to a family of watchmakers who had originally come from London. Her father was William. Does anyone have any further information about the family and why they left London please?
My mother's name was Vera Furneaux, daughter of Walter Smith Furneaux from Brixham. Her grandfather also Walter Smith Furneaux was drowned along with his crew on his boat called Lyra in 1904. There was alot of newspaper coverage at the time. Nobody could understand how the tragedy happened because the weather was calm. It left many families without fathers. I would love to know more about the family history. My mother's and granfather's house were called Churston - so they must have hailed from Churston Ferrers.
hi! cant believe there are sooo many furneaux's thought there were hardly any! proves me wrong! anyone wanting to talk 2 me please do! would love to find out more about our family history! x x
my grandads name was dennis adair furneaux originally from torquay and he had 10 children. if anyone knows of anything to do with him can u please contact me thank you.
We have discovered a Furneaux ancestor when researching our family tree. Her name is Anne Lancaster Furneaux and she married Charles Carey ( my great great great grand father!)in 1801 in the parish church of Soho- St Annes. Anne's parents were Samuel and Hannah. She was born in 1766 ( in the British Lying in Hospital) in Holborn. She had a sister Mary born three years later. We would love to find out more about this branch of the family.

I am interested in finding out about my great-grandfather, Thomas Furneaux, who married a Louisa Clements. He lived in Bow and they had a son, Laurence Thomas, in 1899. There seem to be quite a number of Furneauxs living in the Poplar/Bow area of London at that time.

Hello... I was named for my grandmother and for my great grandmother whose maiden name was Jane Furneaux. I am still to discover the links, but there seem to be so many Jane Furneaux's here for it to be a complete coincidence.
There is link to Furneaux Lodge in the South Island of New Zealand, about Tobias Furneaux. *****://www.furneaux.co.nz/about_us/history.html
Hi, My paternal Grandmother was Joyce Furneaux, 1920-1974. Born at luson, Holbeton, Devon. I know her mothers surname was Coaker and her father was almost definitely George as was his father. She had a brother George and sister Kathleen, I have found a family on your tree that has a Kathleen Cocker married to George Furneaux with children Kathleen, Joe and George. Joyce was known as Joey, how definite is this entry? is it possible to be a mistake? If the children are listed by birth then it is in the right age order. Thanks! Vicy Rogers
I was hoping to get information about my family tree. My mothers maiden name was Rae Furneaux, daughter of Nancey and Bruce Furneaux from Kew Vic Australia. I was hoping to confirm a link to Tobias Furneaux which my grand father had told me about. My father was a Laurence James Furneaux, now dead, married to a Barbara Jennifer Logan. His father was a George (?) Furneaux married to a Florance or Florrie. I'm not sure which is her proper name. It strange to spend your whole life being the only Furneaux family I knew of and there are so many more of us. Do you think we are all related or orginated in the same place? Jane
Hello Thanks for the web site and doing all the hard work. I have Johan and Sabella de Furneaux both in my family tree who married Callard men - my great grandmother was Sarah Callard. With your help I have traced the line back to Ode de Furneaux and am delighted by the pedigree and some of the history of these families. Further to the note on the "help needed" page, I am Donald Furneaux's grand-daughter! As Christine (my mum) returned to the UK from Canada as a very young girl, she lost touch with him and we have no information about what became of him. If anyone does know anything about Donald Furneaux, it would be much appreciated as my mum has made many attempts in the past to trace her father and would love to know if she has any half brothers or sisters out there.

William Samuel Furneaux was my father's grand-father. When my father's father died during the first World War, his widow and my father and his sister lived with WSF and I believe he brought up my father and aunt. I have a picture that WSF painted of the woodland at his home in Sussex. I can't remember the name of the place, but I will talk to my nonagenarian aunt Muriel Case she whether she can remind me of it. She did a lot of genealogy in her younger days and may well have been in touch with some of you then. My husband Jim shares her inerest in genealogy more than I do and he's just found this website. My father was Francis Henry Case, and my aunt is Lucy Muriel Case. Their mother was Ethel Furneaux, and married a John Case. I have no time for more now but I'll certainly keep an eye on this website and guest book in future.
